DETAILED ITINERARY
Three days of a lifetime experience . . .
Day-1 : Tuesday / Friday :
JAIPUR
As you prepare to board the ‘Heritage on Wheels’ at dusk, you have a chance to visit, Jaipur, one of the most well planned cities of its time, popularly known as pink city. This beautiful city was built by Sawai Jaisingh II in 1727 A.D. The city is enriched by a formidable wall and is a blend of tradition and modernity that it is among the ten most beautiful cities of Asia.
Your journey begins at meter gauge platform of Jaipur Railway Station, were the guests are accorded a warm, traditional welcome before boarding the train. Traditionally attired attendants escort you to your cabins. The train leaves for Bikaner in the night beginning a short but fascinating journey. Relax with a drink, of your choice, at the Bar cum lounge. Dinner is served on board.
Day-2 : Wednesday / Saturday :
BIKANER-GAJNER
The next morning train arrives in Bikaner, founded by Maharaja Ganga Singh (1887-1943) whose reformative zeal set the pace for Bikaner’s transformation from a principality to a premier princely state. After breakfast on board, deluxe coaches take you to Bhandeswari Jain Temple. Built in the fifteenth century this temple is the oldest monument of Bikaner decorated with rich mirror work and gold leaf paintings. You then enjoy a fabulous Tonga ride into the narrow lanes of old city of Bikaner to visit Havelis, the ancient Junagarh Fort and Palaces. It’s time, now to shop for Bikaner’s famous Jewellery, leathwear, handicrafts, carpets and textiles.
After lunch on board, a visit to the Camel Research Farm, one of its kind in entire Asia is scheduled, followed by evening tea at Karni Bhawan Palace. You are then off to Gajner, which encompasses a one-of-a-kind wildlife sanctuary. The lush foliage on the Jaisalmer road is a haven to Nilgai, Chinkara, black buck, wild boar, flocks of imperial sand grouse and many more migratory birds. Your day ends with an exotic dinner at Gajner Palace, which includes a vibrant cultural performance by folk artists. The train leaves for padhiyara at nigh. Its time for you to relax and unwind from your earlier hectic schedule.
Day-3 : Thursday / Sunday :
TAL CHHAPAR - SHEKHAWATI :
Early morning the train arrives in Padhiyara. Jeeps take you to Tal Chhapar Black Buck Sanctuary located on the fringe of the Great Indian than Desert. Tal Chappar is the refuge of the most elegant antelope encountered in India, “the Black Buck”. Do not forget your camera to capture the stunning photographs of galloping and hopping black bucks across the field. The sanctuary has a flat tract interspersed with shallow low lying areas, with scattered Acacia and prosopis trees which are representative of a typical Savanna.
After breakfast on board, the train leaves for Ramgarh. It is the first seep of your journey to the open art gallery of Rajasthan (Shekhawati}, founded in the late 18th century. The frescoes at Ramgarh depict scenes from ‘Ramayana’ on the ceilings of cenotaphs and havelis. After the visit to Ramgarh you arrive at Mehansar, founded in mid 18th century has the fines interiors painted in the Sone-Chandi-ki-Sal or the chamber of gold and silver. The Raghunath Temple has the most intricate frescoes.
SHEKHAWATI
The coach then takes you to Mandawa for lunch at the famous Mandawa Castle which is dominated by an imposing mirage like fort, maintained in the classic medieval theme with modern amenities. The next destination is Nawalgarh, which has some of the finest havelis. Anandi Lal Poddar Haveli is worth visiting. Colourful paintings and elaborate architecture make them an interesting destination.
As you return to the Heritage on Wheels, enjoy a refreshing cup of tea just before you leave for Dundlod, where the Havelis are adorned with beautiful paintings. In the evening, dine at Dundlod Castle and enjoy a unique horse dancing show, presented by the owners of the castle. After dinner you are back to the train.
After a good night’s sleep, arrive at Jaipur the next morning. As you leave the Heritage on Wheels, the reminiscences of this splendid journey will linger on your mind fore.
